"Almabtrieb" - Mayrhofen's Autumn Cattle Drive
Traditional, colourful and spectacular - these are the words which best describe this huge festival in Mayrhofen. In fact, there are few places where the 'Almabtrieb' tradition is celebrated on quite such a spectacular scale. If you are interested in living traditions and would like to experience a folk festival in the Ziller Valley in person, then don't miss out - you are guaranteed a varied and unique day out for all the family!The festival opens with a large traditional procession at 9.30am. Find a good spot on the main street early to enjoy the colourful traditional costumes and marching bands. Afterwards, explore the local farmers' stalls and sample the many freshly prepared Ziller Valley delicacies and regional products. Learn about "the good old times" at the exhibitions of traditional craftsmanship which take place all around the village. However, the true "stars" of the festival only arrive in the afternoon. Brightly decorated and to huge applause, the farmers proudly parade the cows through the crowds. After spending months on the mountain pastures, the cattle are returning from their summer vacation. To give thanks for a summer without incident, the animals are dressed in colourful flowers, bells and ornate headdresses.
